MAJOR COMMISSION/PUBLIC WORKS
1976
“ARCANUM XIX Paradise Gained, artist used prismatic glass as a sculptural medium at the Silahis International Hotel. Auspicious beginning of sculptors career using glass as a medium of sculpture.
Orlina’s contribution to society, both to its spirit and the economy, is witnessed by the major commissions he has received. The first, ARCANUM XIX, Paradise Gained, greeted me in the foyer of the Silahis Hotel on the first day of my first visit to the Philippines in 1976. In the 1970s, few large-scale contemporary glass works existed anywhere in the world. This work gave the lie to the popular notion that contemporary glass was a creature of Europe and North America (the work is now on loan to the National Museum).
1983
Greenbelt Lagoon Chapel, Makati City, artist combined his architectural training with his expertise in art and design. Four-part project:
• “Dove of Peace”, 8 meter architectural sculpture design for the
Sacristy, made of concrete with stained glass portals
- “Mudras Cross”, 10 meters high concrete and glass
- “Altar Tabernacle”, wood and glass, artistic centerpiece of Chapel
- “God the Father”, flexi glass ceiling on the dome of chapel with design of God the Father.
1986
“Wings of Victory”, first all-metal sculpture commission consisting of 67
pieces of stylized birds (1 meter in length) in flight suspended from the
eight-storey atrium of Wisma Atria, Orchard Road.
1986
“Fertile Crescent”, glass and stainless steel sculpture 5 meter high, installed at the Marina Park of the Singapore Outdoor Stadium.
1989
“Oneness”, a monumental sculpture 8 meters high in steel and glass that majestically stands at the ASEAN PARK of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex
1992
“Resurrection”, 6 meter high, glass and stainless steel sculpture of the Risen Christ at the Edsa Shrine.
1995
“Quintessence”, a sculptural window installation, 80 square feet with a spiraling design in cast bronze embedded in glass for the Singapore Art Museum.
1996
“Gradual Emergence”, 8 feet high, glass and cast bronze sculpture, Malate, Manila.
1997
“Fountain Head”, 2.1 meters high, glass and steel sculpture at the lobby of San Miguel Property Building.
2011
“QuattroMondial”, a 10 meter high cast bronze & carved glass sculpture on granite base, unveiled on January 27, 2011 for the 400 Centennial Anniversary of the University of Sto. Tomas.
Respected art critic Cid Reyes exalted the masterpiece for being able to capture the spirit of the 400-year-old University while serving its function as a public sculpture dominating the space in which it is placed.
“It’s monumental in terms of its concept,” Reyes said. “It captures the idea of the University – an institution of learning that has survived 400 years and various [disasters that came to] the country and [is still looking] towards the future.”
