Although born in her maternal family’s hometown of Rosario, Cavite in near proximity to Manila, Phyllis Zaballero spent all of her formative years in the United States and Europe. She graduated from the primary and secondary schools of Notre Dame Academy in Boston, Massachusetts and Ecole Internationale de Geneve in Geneva, Switzerland. Her junior college years were spent at the Marymount Colleges of Paris, France and Barcelona, Spain where she was awarded an Associate in Arts degree with first honors in 1960. Along the way she also completed Certificates in French and Spanish languages at the Universities of Geneva and Barcelona respectively.

On her return to the Philippines, Zaballero was enrolled in the University of the Philippines twice, the first time receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1964 and the second time graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 1978,magna cum laude. That was also the year when she was named one of the CCP Thirteen Artists Awardees and began a seven-year period of teaching in her alma mater. During all those busy years she also married a banker, and raised three sons, now fully grown.

Over the past three decades, Phyllis has been the recipient of numerous study grants for culture and the arts from the governments and private foundations of the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Portugal and Macau. Zaballero has continued developing her art by completing courses in stained-glass technique in Provence, France, Lithography Printmaking in the Art Students League and Marathon Drawing in the Studio School, both in New York City.
