Federico Aguilar Alcuaz (6 June 1932- ) is a Philippine painter known for his modern abstract works, visual arts, painting, sculpture and mixed media. He was conferred the National Artist award by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2009. He was born in the City of Manila, the sixth of eleven children. For his primary and secondary education he went to public schools. He took two college courses simultaneously working towards his degree as Associate of Arts in San Beda College in the evenings and working towards his Fine Arts degree in UP in the day. His teachers at UP included Fernando Amorsolo, Guillermo E. Tolentino and other distinguished Philippine artists such as Toribio Herrera, Ireneo Miranda and Constancio Bernardo. Upon completing his undergraduate courses, he took up law in the Ateneo de Manila University, but after graduating with his Diploma in Law in 1955, he decided to pursue his art full-time. He had gotten major awards in seva few competitions by then. That year, he received a scholarship grant from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to study at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Later, he moved to Barcelona. While studying in Spain he reaped major awards in several competitions. Alcuaz' artistic career spans some 55 years. His best works are said to be those he produced from the mid 1960s to the late 1970s. His talent was recognized not only in Spain and the Philippines but in Paris, with 3 major awards. He has exhibited in Spain, the Philippines, Portugal, Poland, the United States and Germany. His works may be found in many museum collections worldwide including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Gulvenkian Foundation Museum of London, the Museum of Modern Art of Warsaw, the Musem of Modern Art of Krakow, and the Philips Cultural Museum of the Netherlands His works Tres Marias and Still Life with Landscape fetched many times their minimum estimated value in the September 2007 Sotheby's auction in Singapore.
